Google Project Tango Smartphone Maps Your World in 3D

In a new project that Google has been working on called the Project Tango, you can now map the surroundings with a new gadget almost looking like a 5” phone and works as a smartphone but has additional hardware and software that would roughly make a quarter of a million calculations per second and takes measurements of your surroundings with the phone’s specially equipped sensors and this would create a 3D model of the space around you.

“As we walk through our daily lives, we use visual cues to navigate and understand the world around us. We observe the size and shape of objects and rooms, and we learn their position and layout almost effortlessly over time. This awareness of space and motion is fundamental to the way we interact with our environment and each other. We are physical beings that live in a 3D world. Yet, our mobile devices assume that physical world ends at the boundaries of the screen. The goal of Project Tango is to give mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion.” said Johnny Lee in a statement on Project Tango “…Now, we’re ready to put early prototypes into the hands of developers that can imagine the possibilities and help bring those ideas into reality”.

The device runs on Android with support programming in Java, C/C++ and Utility Game Engine, the APIs and algorithms are still prototypes and in active development stage. Thus Google is providing about 200 experimental devices to only to professional developers with a zeal to reach beyond the touch screen apps and with a lot of imagination and innovative ideas to percolate down to the coding and usage of a real world 3D mapping tool.

These devices can be a breakthrough in many fields like creating a 3D model of your house when you would like to go shopping for new furniture, or gamers creating new games which would enable you to have a playing area of your house and would make it a war zone, the possibilities are just too many.  Google wants Developers/ Innovators/ Gamers to apply for the project to request for the devices with their Specific ideas and encourages them to be Creative, Bold and Innovative.

Google expects to give out all the 200 prototype devices it has now latest by March 14th, 2014 after evaluating the various entries from all those interested Developers who have submitted their ideas.
